Raynox HD-5000 PRO on the Canon HV20 - English summary
06.07.2007
The missing wide angle capability is one of the few
issues of the Canon HV20. The Raynox HD-5000 PRO is a
0.5x wide angle converter that extends the limited
angle of Canons built-in lens. However the Raynox
5000 features a 37mm thread and cannot be mounted
directly on the 43mm thread of the HV20.
For my test I did not use the 43mm adapter ring provided by Raynox with the WA-lens because it sets the lens to far from the HV20 lens. This distance results in heavy vigetting (black corners).
A Chinese Shop in Ebay offers a shorter thread adapter. All my tests have been conducted with this adapter. As you can see in my test shots, there are still shaded corners. They are not visible on HV20's screen or view finder, but on acurate screens they are disturbing.
My conclusion: the quality of the Raynox 5000 is ok for occasional use. If you are looking for clean wide angle shots, sharp from the center to the corner, then you should probably try another adapter lens. I will try the Canon WD-H43 when it is available over here in Europe.
